9th Grade: Build the Foundation

The single most important thing a 9th grader can do is start paying attention to what genuinely interests them. Not what looks good. What they would pursue if no one was watching.

This is the year to go deep on one activity rather than joining everything. The year to start building real relationships with teachers who will eventually write recommendation letters. The year to make intentional course choices that build toward the junior year schedule, which is the most-scrutinized transcript of all.

10th Grade: Build the Narrative

Sophomore year is when patterns start to form. The activities your child commits to this year become the thread an admissions officer can follow. The coursework decisions made now determine what AP classes are available in 11th grade.

This is also the year to identify the two or three teachers who know your child well enough to write a specific, compelling recommendation letter. Those relationships take time to build. Starting in 10th grade means the letter is strong when it is eventually written.

11th Grade: Execute the Strategy
