3 Ways 12th Grade Parents Can Be Awesome

Uncategorized

If you have a senior right now, your life is crazy. The year has just started, there may be another round of SATs or ACTs to take and there’s a good chance that your senior has not completed all of their essays.

Am I correct?

Trust me, your senior needs you. Don’t panic, instead…...

Make yourself a resource.

Help your kid to review the essay questions and brainstorm with them. Encourage them to ask  for your opinion. Your memory of their accomplishments is invaluable. You have the kinds of details that they need for colorful anecdotes. Offer your mind and you will be helping them tremendously.

Understand that this is a process.

Essay writing cannot be done overnight. Choosing a strategy should only come after considering a range of options. It’s important to remember that it’s called the “college application process” for a reason.  Frustration and procrastination are often symptoms of perfectionism, and you can play a key role in helping manage stress and expectations. Slow and steady wins the race.

Remember whose essay this is.

PLEASE do not write your kid’s essay. Colleges will sniff it out in a minute and you’ll only have yourself to blame. Let your kid own the process and just be a resource to brainstorm and proofread. Please and thank you.
